Jack Straton is a photographer in Portland, Oregon, USA, whose "heritage" is the West Coast school, creating abstractions and landscapes with film cameras ranging form 8x10" to 35mm in color and black and white. His creative expressions also extend to quantum scattering theory, music, and anti-racist education. He earned a BFA in Photography from the U of O in 1977, worked as a professional Jazz drummer for three years, and in the 1980s earned a doctorate in Physics. He has been a community educator since 1985 when he founded Men Against Rape in Eugene, Oregon, and since 1998 has been an interracial dialogue group facilitator. Through all of this he has continued to devote about a quarter of his waking hours to photography.

The world calls to us as we pass and we must be willing to stop to locate that voice, even in the midst of desolation. We ultimately find that we recognize some part of ourselves in this worldscape, a resonance that pulls us to truly see what surrounds us. We can then take that connection with us as we continue our journey, more aware of the world's delight in being -- indeed twirling its dance with joy.

His first piece of advice to young photographers is to pay attention to the light above all else a scene offers. A piece of flotsome with a play of light across its surface will ultimately draw viewers into a resonance with what is seen better than does a potentially beautiful or interesting scene devoid of luminosity. His second piece of advice is passed on from his teacher Bernie Freemensser: "pay attention to the corners of the image and the photograph will take care of itself."
